General MBA Degree
Students who successfully complete the seven core modules and two elective courses are
eligible for the award of the MBA Degree.

Specialist MBA Degree
Edinburgh Business School and English School of Business offer students the opportunity to study for a specialist MBA in five subject areas:

  1. Finance,
  2. Marketing,
  3. Human Resources Management,
  4. Strategic Planning and
  5. Public Administration.

To qualify for the award of the Specialist MBA, a student must successfully complete the seven core modules plus four electives, selected from the designated group that follows:

Obviously, students are not able to hold two MBA degrees from Heriot-Watt University. Thus, those wishing to pursue a Specialist MBA they can follow one of two options:

  1. Having completed that nine courses (see above), instead of graduating complete the additional requirements for the Specialist degree.  Once this is accomplished students can apply to graduate and receive the degree of Master of Business Administration with their selected specialisation.
  2. Graduate upon completion of nine courses and subsequently complete the additional requirements for the Specialist degree. Students receive their degree certificate upon graduation and a further certificate which confirms that, having been awarded the degree of Master of Business Administration in certain year, the student has duly completed a further course of study and satisfied the examiners and, by resolution of the Senate, been awarded a specialisation in one of the groups in the afore-mentioned tables.

Postgraduate Certificates and Diploma
The MBA Programme is structured to allow the greatest possible flexibility. Students have the opportunity to receive interim qualifications en route to the MBA; they are the Postgraduate Certificate and the Postgraduate Diploma. 

Requirements for a Postgraduate Certificate
To be eligible for the award of a Postgraduate Certificate, a student must:

  1. Be matriculated;
  2. Successfully complete two MBA courses, and at least one core module.
  3. A maximum of one exemption or credit transfer will be permitted for the award of the Postgraduate Certificate.
  4. Eligibility for the award of a Postgraduate Certificate includes the ability to matriculate to the MBA.

Requirements for a Postgraduate Diploma
To be eligible for the award of a Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration, a student must:

  1. Be matriculated;
  2. Successfully complete five MBA courses, and at least one core module.
  3. A maximum of two exemptions or credit transfers will be permitted for the award of the Postgraduate Diploma.
  4. Eligibility for the award of a Postgraduate Diploma includes the ability to matriculate to the MBA.

Specialist (named) Postgraduate Diploma
To be eligible for the award of a Specialist Postgraduate Diploma, a student must:

  1. Complete six courses, to include the relevant core modules and at least four of the electives designated as relevant to the specialisation in question. Thus, a student undertaking the Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resource Management would have to complete Organisational Behaviour plus four from Consumer Behaviour, Human Resource Management, Influence and Negotiation, and one other course or .module
  2. A maximum of two exemptions or credit transfers will be permitted for the award of the Postgraduate Diploma.

Eligibility for the award of a Postgraduate Diploma includes the ability to matriculate.

Specialist Postgraduate Diplomas are available in the same designation as MBA degrees with specialisation.
